Adolescent Affluenza

Adolescent affluenza is very common nowadays. Affluenza is a mental state characterized by extreme desire for materialistic comforts without any regard for the aftereffects. Irrespective of financial capacity for being extravagant one indulges in shopping spree and finds enjoyment in possessing goods that are trends in market.
Adolescence is an age marked by immaturity in choices and decisions. One is merely intent upon satisfying immediate needs. Actually such an irresponsible spending spree can happen because of three reasons.
Dissatisfied childhood cravings may try for its accomplishment. To some affluenza is a means to compensate with their low self esteem. They identify themselves with their possession and take pride in them.
This may also give a vague feeling of security.
The second reason is easy availability of money. If an adolescent has unrestricted access to money he is likely to lose discipline in spending and this facilitate his chances for immediate satisfaction of his cravings. And cravings themselves invite more cravings and result in the formation of the trait called affluenza in the individual.
And the last one is failure of parents and teachers to inculcate a judicious respect for money. Those who try to teach adolescent a habit of saving for tomorrow is helping the adolescent to be rational in his shopping habits. This quality will help him later in the financial area of his life. We can see that one of the reasons for the poverty is ignorance about the necessity of keeping a balance between earning and spending.
For today's generation, compared to 19th century material needs are greater in number thanks to modern life and ever pervading consumerism that upholds material comfort over everything. Materialism is the disguised form of hedonism. Adolescent affluenza is very common among families where the norm that the way to happiness is amassing material comforts is cherished and lived with.
A cognitive restructuring of the adolescent addicted to extravaganza is the only solution. This should be followed by restructuring those dynamics in his environment that contribute to affluenza.
